A Beginner’s Guide To Bird Training

  By Marigold R Flores

Bird parrots are known of their ability to mimic human voices and speeches.  For such reason, this particular breed of birds is renowned as pets.  With every parrot one sees, there is always the nagging question of whether or not it talks.  Parrots may talk, but they certainly are not born with such ability.  How does a parrot learn to talk?  The answer is simple.  It comes as a result of proper bird training.

You may have heard of dog or cat training.  But parrot?  Or is there really such a thing as bird training?  Yes, there is such a thing.  For some areas, bird training is in fact a common practice, while in some places, they find it rare to do so.  But all in all, bird training exists and is very real.

So going back, do you have any idea on how to train a parrot to utter words?  Beforehand, it is important to recognize the type of bird parrot you have or you are going to train.  The classification is highly essential.  Bird training techniques for a pet parrot vary according to the class of each parrot.  This is because each parrot, like any other human beings and animals differ in learning potentials and skills.  The same applies to the parrot family as well.

There are species of parrot that learns easily, as well as those that learn not as fast with the others.  The African Greys parrots are much talked about for their capability to master 2,000 words.  Others, which include the parakeets, hardly ever utter a single word no matter how long you teach them.  Other birds in the animal kingdom essentially exhibit varied skills and predispositions to conversations with pet owners.

It proves to be much easier to bird train a parrot once it is still very young.  You may start the gradual and crucial process of bird training the moment your bird pet had been tamed.  Before you start with whatever training you intend for your bird, do not forget what you are about do is a truly laborious and frustrating task.  Patience must be observed.  You can expect your parrot to show progress either earlier or much, much later depending on how it feels to have you around.

You can start your training with the least time, like 15 minutes each day for the initial sessions.  Try to limit your sessions into this time for a while, because beyond 15 minutes, more likely, you and your bird will both be drained at the end of every session, without much progress yet.  You have to be sure that your pet stays calm all the time, without any distractions.

You begin with the simplest words like “hi,” “how are you?” or “hello.”  Be patient enough to repeat the words or phrase over and over until your pet is accustomed to it already.  As you get some response, never forget to offer a treat and praise your pet.  Animals are very much like humans.  They come with the natural need to be appreciated.  With bird treats and obvious appreciation at every good deed, your parrot will be even more driven to learn.

At first, you will notice a strange sound coming from your bird.  But eventually, as your pet gets the hang of it, it will learn to formulate words properly.  Even with a fairly talented bird, it usually takes about two weeks or more before a parrot can distinguishably speak.  It seems harder at the start but as your pet learns its primary words and phrases, the rest will be easier.

It proves to be a benevolent idea to follow some pattern in training your bird.  This way, it will be familiar with the procedure making all of which, easy to abide into.  Create a specific time plan and a habit.  It is amicable to associate habit in your training sessions as it hastens and eases learning for the parrot, helping it remembers and catches on with everything you teach.  A pattern or habit may be something like saying “good morning” every morning you come down.  Hearing the words “good morning” daily will be implanted on the parrot, making it an efficient bird training strategy.
