The Process Of Grooming Horses Simplified

  By Ashley A Icamen

One thing that can really change one’s mind about getting a horse is the prospect of grooming it. Grooming is indeed necessary when it comes to proper horse care. A lot of people view this as a tasking chore. However, grooming horses need not be tasking at all. In fact, viewing this as an enjoyable thing to do can do wonders for just about anyone. For one thing, when you exert time and effort in grooming your horse, you actually develop that sense of bond with your pet. Trust is earned faster when you take the time and the effort to groom your horse. Another plus when it comes to grooming your horse is that you become aware of whatever early signs of skin infections, skin diseases, and injuries that your pet might have. You can catch them early on so that they can be dealt with accordingly as well.

Grooming horses need not be a long process at all. As long as you have the right tools and you have established a routine that works for you, grooming can be completed in such a short time. One thing you should do, though, is to keep all of your tools in a single container that you can easily carry around. This way, you won’t have to search high and low for a particular tool, and you don’t have to do any fetching of such tools as well.

If you are not too sure which tools to include in your grooming kit, then the following should be in order: bristle brushes that come in soft, medium, and stiff, detangler for the tail and the mane, hoof pick, hoof dressing, rubber currycomb, mane comb, insect repellent, shedding blade, sponge, towel, grooming mitt, and conditioner. There may be other tools that you would want to include in your grooming kit. But with these bas

ic tools, you can start grooming your horses in no time at all.

When grooming your horse, there are two things that you should remember, for these two go hand in hand. The first thing is to groom your horse in an open area. The second thing is to secure your horse by tying a loose knot. You may wonder why the knot should be loose here. You never know when a horse would get spooked while you are grooming it. Thus, with a loose knot, the horse can easily untangle itself from the knot and bolt. This means fewer risks for injury for both the horse and you yourself.

Now comes the grooming process. It does not really matter where you start because this would depend on your preference. Generally, a lot of people like to begin grooming with the hooves. A hoof pick and brush should be used in removing debris and dirt from the horse’s hooves. You can then move to cleaning the horse’s eyes, nose, and muzzle with a damp sponge. A grooming mitt or a soft bristle brush can be used to brush the forelock areas and the face.  For the horse’s body, you can use the rubber currycomb, bringing it in circular motion. The dirt that the currycomb loosens should then be brushed off from the horse’s body. For the legs, you can use either a soft brush or a grooming mitt to brush off dirt.

But when it comes to the mane, it is important to use a detangler, so that it would be easier to brush it with a mane comb afterward. Do not use the comb to force tangles out. This can very well hurt your horse. Instead, you should use your hands. Like the mane, a detangler should be applied to the tail as well. You can then use a towel to wipe the coat of your horse and bring it to a brilliant shine. With these easy steps, grooming horses does not sound so bad after all!
