The Intricate Process of Dog Breeding

Dog breeding is not as easy as it may seem at first glance. In fact, there are a lot of things to consider about dog breeding. The first goal of this endeavor is actually good temperament. There are a number of characteristics in dogs that any breeder would not want to see when it comes to dog breeding. These characteristics include shyness, fear of strangers, fear of unexpected and sudden changes, and fear of leaving a common environment, just to name a few. These traits should be avoided because these can easily be passed on to any offspring when dog breeding is initiated. In dog breeding, it is also very important for breeders to understand canine genetics. But when it comes to good temperament, this is actually a dominant trait that dates way back to the ancestral genes of dogs.

There is so much more to dog breeding than merely placing a male and a female dog in one room. This does not guarantee effective breeding at all. In fact, every breeder has to understand the sexual maturity of female dogs first. This is actually the first step in ensuring proper dog breeding. The first period of heat that the female dog experiences is not always the proper time for breedin

g at all. In fact, breeders prefer to wait for that second period of heat because this is the time when the dog is more likely ready for pregnancy.

As expected, the careful choice of parents is essential in dog breeding. As dog breeders, you have to be sure that the parent dogs are free from negative inborn traits. One way of ensuring this is to take a good and in-depth look into the ancestry of both parent dogs. This way, the acquisition of negative inborn traits would be prevented.

All professional breeders should also have full comprehension of the concepts of dominant, recessive, and mixed characteristics. The concept of like producing like does apply here; however, these characteristics do not always make that perfect blend that is desired by the breeders and dog lovers themselves. Understanding the genetics of dog characteristics can mean the difference between success and failure in dog breeding.

Dog breeding can indeed take its toll on the breeders at times. However, when that perfect blend is achieved from the parent dogs, there is nothing more rewarding than knowing that you are able to produce a litter of extremely healthy puppies. And this is indeed the goal of any professional dog breeder.
