The Ferret: An Exotic Animal Turned Pet

Nowadays, the idea of getting an exotic animal for a pet has become quite appealing. And the idea has becoming more and more appealing with the appearance of a lot of people taking in such pets. Of course, the concept of having a pet that is out of the ordinary assortment of dogs, cats, hamsters, and such, can also be one of the main reasons why people are entertaining the thought of getting exotic animal pets.

What is also great about this concept is that there is quite a wide assortment of exotic animals that you can choose from! One popular choice is actually the ferret. First and foremost, the ferret is not a wild animal at all, much to the surprise of a lot of people. In fact, the ferret is indeed one of the exotic animals that can be domesticated very easily. This exotic animal is actually a descendant of what is known as the European polecat. The more common name for its ancestor is the weasel. This is a strong indication that the ferret is actually related to the mink, the otter, the skunk, and the badger.

You actually have a lot of options for ferrets as well because they come in a wide variety of colors. They are even categorized as such because of their varying colors. The most common is the Fitch ferret, which is buff-colored in nature, and has black masks. Its feet and tail are also black. Albino ferrets, on the other hand, are white with very pink eyes. There is also what is known as the Siamese ferret. A female ferret is known as a jill, while its male counterpart is known as a hob. Regardless of gender, the baby ferrets are known as kits.

Ferrets make great pets because they are very social and engaging. Their playful nature would make them ideal companions in a household that has a lot of children. What’s more, these cute critters are very easy to train, especially when using the litter box. This is because ferrets tend to excrete their waste at the same places. You can just position a litter box at these common places and everything will fall into place the natural way. Of course, there might be a need to have one litter box in the house. But this is an worthy investment as well.

And if you already have dogs and cats as pets before you take in a ferret, then there is no need to worry about the three species living under the same roof. Dogs, cats, and ferrets do not have inherent animosity towards each other, contrary to the common belief that cats and dogs have animosity towards each other. However, if you already have a pet bird inside the household, you might want to consider getting the exotic animal ferret as a pet. Ferrets are known to attack birds, even when they are contained in cages. Thus, if you still want to get a ferret in spite of having a pet bird already, then you should take the necessary measures of keeping them apart.

Ferrets are also very small animals, so you might want to prepare your household for its arrival. Call it “ferret-proofing”, if you may. Make sure that you seal all holes that are of more than an inch in diameter. Ferrets love to crawl into such holes, and this just might lead them to tamper with whatever wires and such in your house. You would not want such an accident to happen. Thus, it is of much importance to do this.

You can also get your ferret a collar with a bell attached to it. This way, when you ferret is frolicking round the house, you would be able to hear where it is running about. Keeping an eye on this exotic animal would then be made easier.
