The Complete Lizard Buying Guide

Exotic creatures have definitely become popular pets for so many people all over the world these days. And lizards have become one of the favorites of many people as well. If you think about it, lizards are very easy pets to have when it comes to feeding, handling, and maintenance. Still, there are a number of things to consider when choosing the right lizard pet for you.

The very first thing on your list should be your choice of lizard. You have to know and decide what kind of lizard you really want. Once you have made this choice, you can then do research on your part, so that you can know everything there is to know about your lizard of choice. Books, magazines, and even the Internet are just some of the many sources you can turn to when gathering relevant information. But when it comes to the Internet, you have to be careful with the sites you choose as well. There are so many personal sites that give wrong information about the different breeds of lizards. Of course, the webmasters of these sites do not really mean to give misleading information. These cases just might come from the personal experiences they have had with their own lizard pets. But you can never regard their experiences as general information about these different breeds. Thus, you should go for the sites of breeders themselves. This way, you can be sure that the information here is all accurate and reliable.

Some of the lizards that have been caught in the wild indeed make fair pets. But this is not always the case. When they are shipped out to their new locations, there is that very strong tendency for overcrowding of the animals to occur. Overcrowding actually promotes easier transmission of diseases, so the longer these lizards are exposed to other pets, the higher the chances of them contracting disea
ses and infections. Thus, be wary about getting lizards that have been imported from the wild.

There is also another problem that is quite common with wild lizards. Because they come from the wild, they are more often than handled quite roughly by a number of people. Because of this, these lizards become distrustful. In the case of adult lizards that have been caught from the wild, it really would not matter if they had been handled roughly. Because they grew up in the wild, they would be inherently antisocial. Thus, you could come to the conclusion that pet stores would be better sources for pet lizards. Still, you cannot discount the fact that some pet stores do get the lizards they sell from the wild. And you can never know for sure because pet lizards don't exactly come with breeding papers and licenses, you know. Thus, the only proper way to do this is to check out the lizard you are interested in.

The good signs that you should look out for include the existence of just a small number of lizards in the terrarium. It would be better if there were only 1 species in that terrarium. Go for the active and alert lizards that have their eyes constantly open. The terrarium should have complete information as to the scientific names and the care sheets. The water dishes should be full and clean for each individual lizard, with the presence of heat pads and heat lamps in the terrarium.

There are also bad signs to look out for. If the seller says that caring for the lizard you're interested in is just like caring for an iguana or a bearded dragon, chances are, he does not really know what he's talking about. Proper care of different species of lizards come in different ways as well. Thus, steer clear from these sellers. Do not go for lizards in terrariums that are overcrowded, especially if there are dead lizards in the vicinity. If the terrariums are laden with urates and fecal matter, then avoid these as well.

another one easy way to check if the seller is not telling you the truth is to point at a lizard that is always wild caught and ask him/her if it is a captive bred or wild caught. When the seller say captive bred, then he/she is lying. Expect more lies to follow.

Exotic pets can make for interesting pets but your points are well-taken. Owners need to do their research before purchasing a lizard.
