  By Ashley A Icamen

It does not take a cowboy or a farmer to know how to properly take care of horses. In fact, the lack of knowledge on proper care of horses is one of the main things that stop people from getting these majestic animals as pets. Of course, it is expected that there would be quite a number of things to remember when caring for horses. Still, the experience is very rewarding, for all horse lovers out there.

If you own a horse, then you should be very familiar with the following aspects: age, breed, season, activity level, and health issues. These are some of the aspects a horse owner has to be aware of, to ensure the proper care and welfare of horses. There are some horses that are just like any other pet. These are the horses that are prone to weight gain, especially when there is a significant lack of physical activity. This is more rampant in cases when such lack takes place in a sudden fashion. When this happens, there would be a need to adjust the diet of the horses. This should be done to avoid any untoward incidents pertaining to the diet of the horses. There are also other horses that can be pretty clumsy. This is especially true of horses that inflict wounds on their own selves. These are the horses you need to keep your eyes on.

Beyond that, let’s get into the basics in horse care then. One important thing to remember about horses is that they love to spend time grazing in open spaces, either by themselves or with their herd. Either way, this is indeed something any horse enjoys doing.

Even for the most companionable horse, there will be inevitable times when it would not have the company of humans an

d other horses that it has grown accustomed to. During this times, the horse might get bored out of its wits, and discontentment is surely around the corner. This is something any horse owner should prevent. As a horse owner, you should teach or train your horse to do things on its own, towards the goal of satisfying its physical needs.

And then, there is the matter of pasturing your horse. There is no exact measurement when it comes to acreage for your horse. In a general sense, one acre of pasture would be fitting per horse. But before you go about pasturing your horse, there are a number of things you should look out for. Beforehand, you should determine if the pasture is free of holes in the fencing, trash, and other things that can be considered potential hazards. It is also important to check if your pasture is free of plants that are poisonous. This is not just a onetime check that you should do, you know. A poisonous plant can grow at just about anytime. To be safe, you should check your pasture for such plants, say, once a week. The more times you do this, however, the better. Plants that are harmful to horses include yew, ragwort, locoweed, deadly nightshade, buttercups, laurel, oak leaves, acorns, privet, bracken, meadow saffron, horsetail, castor bean, sorghum, and star thistle. And these are just some of the many poisonous plants that can grow in your pasture at any time! There are so many more out there! This is precisely why it is important to examine your pasture every now and then.

There are so many sources, both online and offline, which can help you get down with the basics of horse care. You can check such websites easily because they are all over the web. You can also go to your local library and find such sources easily. Whatever floats your boat here, finding information on horses is indeed something that is very doable.
