Origin of Siamese cats

Siamese cats originated in the Far East, particularly in the island of Siam (modern-day Thailand), from which they are named from.  These cats were believed to be the royal guardians of Buddhist temples and were, thus, regarded as sacred.

The first Siamese cats were exported to England in the mid to late 1800’s as a present from the English Consul to Thailand.  Since then, Siamese cats quickly caught the fancy of feline lovers not only for their antics, but also because of their unique physique.  Eventually, this breed became the focus in pet shows and various breeds of Siamese cats emerged following this fame.

Siamese cat breeders develop various breeds

The traditional Siamese cats, which were native to Thailand, were called seal-point cats due to their very dark extremities (face, ears, feet, and tail) and a light-colored neck and body part.  From the time of the introduction of Siamese cats into Europe, Siamese cat breeders were able to develop various breeds.  This, in addition to the breed’s genetic influence on other European cat breeds.

Thus, what you may find lately are Siamese breeds that have a different appearance from the ones that came all the way from Thailand in the 1800s.  Instead of a large, robust, round-headed cat are emaciated cats with slender bodies and wedge-shaped heads.

Traditional Siamese cats are very rare these days, primarily because Siamese cat breeders are focusing on different kinds of breeds.  Fortunately, the rise in demand for the traditional breeds is causing its comeback.  Siamese cat breeders are now reviving the traditional Siamese cats – the ones with muscular bodies, mild temperament, and people-friendly personality, although it doesn’t imply that the modern breeds do not possess this personality as well.

If you’re looking for Siamese cat breeders, you may be surprised to see that each breeder specializes in a different look.  Some breeders retain the traditional breed (although there’s only very few of them), while others focus on breeding more refined cats with a triangular appearance and large ears.  These cats have svelte but muscular bodies, with long legs that are higher in the hinds than the fronts. 

Another surprising fact among Siamese cat breeders is they tend to be protective of their kittens.  Many breeders might ask you for the kind of environment the kitten will be raised in, the food, and how you intend to care for your new feline.  Some breeders might request for you to sign an agreement stating that the cat will be spayed/neutered, NEVER de-clawed, and that it should only be an indoor cat.

Choosing Siamese cat breeds

Prospective buyers will have to decide on what type of Siamese breed they prefer.  Siamese cat breeders developed two general basic body types which they refer to as “extreme” and “traditional”.  The former is what’s favored in show rings.

Thanks to Siamese cat breeders, what you see today are four different Siamese coat colors including the traditional seal-point colors.  Other coat colors you may consider are chocolate point (which range from deep to pale chocolate brown); blue point cats have slate-gray points; while the lilac points have silvery, lavender points.
