Self Defense: Should I Get a Guard Dog?
This is a question I received a few days ago and I thought I would elaborate on it a bit. Should I get a guard dog to protect my home? Well this is soley depending on one's preferences and likes. This is like asking me whether or not you should get a Toyota. Do you like Toyotas? I'm not sure what to advise you to get but I can give you some tips in order to help the situation out a bit. I, myself do not have a guard dog. I am going to get a bull dog within the next couple months and that is as far as a guard dog as I am going to go. Dogs are a lot of work and require a lot of attention. So if you think you are just going to buy a dog, stick it in the corner, and hope it protects you your wrong. Don't forget a little thing called responsibility. You have to take care of it. Another thing to remember is that you don't want to get a dog that's not going to protect you. If a burglar goes into your home and see's a Chi Wawa sitting there do you think he is going to run for his life? I think we all know the answer to that one. You're better off hav
ing pepper spray in the house and hoping it will go off accidently when the burglar walks by. Small dogs are good at being pets, not guard dogs and pets. If you want a good guard dog you should get something that fits your needs. If you live in an apartment you don't need a Great Dane. If you have a 10,000 square foot home however, you could probably get one and never worry about it getting in the way. Just an obvious observation. Get a bigger dog that you like. You don't have to have a pit bull or anything like that. You can have a lab, a boxer, or a Golden Retriever. Any of those dogs would work and they are all great with kids. The key here is to have common sense. Don't do things you know you can't do and don't put a dog in your home if you know you're not going to take care of it. I have seen too many people buy a dog for hopes that it will save the day but it never works that way. They come home and their house is trashed and the next thing you know the dog is for sale or given away. Pay attention to the little guy and show him some love. He will return the favor by protecting you and keeping your family safe. Case closed!
