Birds are very delicate and sensitive pets, which is why it is very important to keep them safe at all times. Your house may make your pet bird potentially at risk for different types of hazards. These can cause serious complications to your feathered friend and may even cause death as well. To protect your pet bird inside your home, you need to consider the following:

Contact with children and other pets. You should take extra care when introducing your pet bird to children, other pet animals, including birds of other genus, as they can be aggressive towards each other. Show your child the proper way to handle a bird and don’t leave your bird unattended with another pet, even if they may appear to be getting along well.  Also, put your bird cage in a safe place where other predatory or inquisitive pets cannot harm them. Moreover, cover aquarium to prevent your pet bird from accidents such as drowning, ingestion of toxic substances, etc. Always make sure that you keep your pet implements clean and organized to keep your pet bird safe, sound and healthy.

Crushing and suffocation. Some birds like hiding under things or finding spots wherein they can build nests. Give special attention to small birds, as they may not easily be noticed and be injured or trapped by moving objects. Try to keep your bird away from mechanical devices such as vacuum cleaners, electrical tools, computer printers and other equipment with moving parts. Also, be careful when using recliners or folding beds and check laundry baskets and bed covers before you lay anything on them.

Doors, skylights and windows. Pet birds can fly right through these points, which can injure them. Use blinds, drapes or shapes to cover windows. You may also install decals as well. You may want to clip your pet bird’s nails to keep it from getting tangled up in the fabric or cord. Make sure that your screens are sturdy and properly installed as well. Check for loose wires or holes that can injure your pet bird. Especially if your pet bird is untamed, consider clipping its wings to prevent it from flying, although his speed may slow down if you do. It may also be helpful to use a flight suit with a lanyard as well.

Electrical cords. Electrical cords can be very seriously threatening to your pet bird. Chewing on them can cause burns and even electrocution. To minimize the risk of these hazards, try using spiral cable wrap, which is a flexible sheath made of plastic that can be wound around electrical cords. However, your pet bird can still chew through it so you may want to keep an eye on him more closely or you can also try other alternatives such as cord concealers and PVC pipes.

Extreme temperature. Too much heat or cold can be hazardous to your pet bird. Keep your bird from drafty areas, fans and air-conditioning, open windows and direct heat and sunlight. Make sure that your fans are turned off when your bird is loose to avoid injuries. 

Kitchen. Always keep your pet bird away from the kitchen as it can come with so many possible hazards such as burns from kitchen appliances, smoke and toxic fumes from food and cooking equipment, drowning in the sink, entrapment or injuries in open appliances, cuts from sharp or pointed utensils and toxic food such as chocolate, spices, caffeinated drinks, among others.

Bathroom. Just like the kitchen, bathrooms can also pose as much hazards to your pet bird as well. Keep him from access to water in bathtubs, Jacuzzis, sinks and toilet bowls. Also, keep medications and other potentially toxic substances such as cosmetics and cleaning agents out of your pet bird’s reach.

It is always better to be safe than sorry. By being constantly being on the lookout for possible household hazards and keeping an eye on your pet bird, you can be sure it will live a healthier, longer and happier life.
