Pet Bird Care: The Essentials

  By Marigold Flores

Apart from your feline and canine friends, birds make convivial and wonderful pets.  A lot of birds like to have close contacts with their owners, all the more making them cuddly, fun and sociable.  There are also other breeds of birds that enjoy singing or talking, especially those of the parrot family.  Parrots are loving birds, as they like to share things with you such as meals, nap time and even rejoice in taking a shower with you.  How does this sound to you?  Parrots just cherish interacting with humans.  Birds, in general, are extremely manageable to care, as they are cheering and are great companions.

Pet bird care naturally varies on the type of bird you have.  But in general, birds share common caring requirements.  To start with, in housing your pet bird, you have the choices of cage living or aviary living.  Should you decide to a birdcage, see to it that the cage is roomy enough for your pet to fly a little and stretch its wings.  It is important for birds to regularly flap their wings without hitting something or anything on.  Horizontal bars are also of great importance for your pet to perch on.  The bar spacing must be of short distances or smaller in gap if you have small-headed birds.  The idea there is to keep your pet’s head from getting into the spaces in between of the cage walls.  If you have the type of bird that chews on things constantly, better keep it in a cage with metal bars.

Meanwhile, aviaries are befitting as it provide larger areas and space for the birds to fly and roam around.  Mostly, this type of bird housing serves right for breeding purposes.  Aviaries can either be outdoors or indoors.  With indoor aviaries, you are provided with the possibility of temperature control, as well as noise, lighting and humidity.  An indoor aviary is usually a room in a house especially devoted for birds.  On the other hand, an outdoor aviary offers a natural habitat for your pet birds and can be designed in stylish variations.  Since this set up exposes the birds to the changing weather, sheltering must be provided with temperature control necessary for extreme conditions.  To create a more satisfying aviary, be sure to equip it with windbreaks and shared areas.  Tree branches fit nicely and perfectly to such setting.  But do not forget to have your trees or any wooden elements be toxic free.

Another essential needs of birds, like any living creature are foods.  In feeding your birds, there are significant choices such as bird feed mix, formulated diets, seed-only diets and supplements.  Bird feed mixes specifically cater to each breed.  Therefore, in purchasing any, make sure you are getting what suits well for your pet.  Feed mixes are consists of formulated foods, assortment of seeds, supplements and necessary vitamins.  All in all, bird mixes are regarded as beneficial in providing birds with healthful nutrition.

Furthermore, formulated diets also offer nutritional base for birds as they contain vitamins and minerals.  Thus, additional vitamins may not be required anymore.  However, the formulated kind does not contain antioxidant pigments or the phytonutrients found in fruits, grains, seeds and vegetables, while the seed-only diets bring forth wide varieties of nutrients but still need additional doses of calcium and vitamin supplements.  Seeds already consist of protein and divided into cereal type like millet or oil type like that of sunflower seed.

Do not dwell solely on one particular feeding approach like the seeds-only or formulated diets.  Pros and cons come with such choice.  However, to balance your choice, befitting supplements are available to enrich whatever type of diet you provide for your birds.  Bird supplements include sprouted vegetables, fruits and non-toxic green plants, as well as soaked seeds.  All fruit supplements make healthy diets such as pears, plums, apples, berries, oranges, grapes and a lot more.

Pet bird care does not end with how well you provide your bird pets with their homes and foods, but they must also be kept busy with exercises and activities.  With enough room to fly, your pets are at the same time, provided with the benefits of exercise.  Flying, climbing from branch to branch or hopping from one horizontal bar are all forms of good exercises for birds.  Aside from exercise, also encourage your pet to engage in fun activities.  To realize this, provide your birds with plastic toys or have playpens for them.  Bird toys can be bought from any pet stores.  Just ask the sales personnel for you to be guided on what to buy.

As much as possible, learn the essential pet bird care ahead before you get your birds to ensure you know just what to do, as well as to determine whether or not you can accommodate the proper care to your pets, considering the busy schedule and lifestyle that you have.  Once you really know you can, then choose your birds and take the time each day to talk or simply be with them.  Your birds too appreciate spending some time with you.
