Nowadays, more and more people are actually considering getting reptiles for pets. Sure, the popular choices for pets are still dogs, cats, birds, hamsters, and the like. But reptiles, ah, they do make interesting pets. This is particularly true where exotic animals are concerned.
However, there are a number of things to consider when getting reptiles for pets. You see, there are so many legalities entailed with this endeavor. To name a few, state laws have been submitted regarding legislation. The type, breeding restrictions, size, and even cage requirements now have a lot of considerations placed upon them. And these have already been passed to the government at so many levels!
There is a good reason behind this actually. Let us not forget that these reptiles are actually of non-indigenous species. This means that the reptiles would be considered foreign or alien creatures in our very own environment or habitat. With the introduction of such reptiles in our society, there is always that risk of the environment being put in danger. A reptile pet on the loose, for one thing, can harm the general public, especially when this pet feels threatened to some extent. Local fauna would also be harmed by such an incident! Thus, it is of much import that the requirements mandated by the law would be met, so that there wouldn’t be any expenses unexpectedly coming up.
The issue of husbandry is another aspect to consider here. Let us face it: reptiles do not have the same needs as that of the usual dog or cat. When you have a dog or cat, you would have somewhat an understanding of the animal’s needs, in a general sense. In fact, it is quite easy to discern the needs of dogs and cats, so pet owners would be better prepared to face each one of them. However, with reptiles, this is a different story. They are way beyond conventional pet, especially when it comes to their needs in an environment. For starters, a reptile pet would need constant supply of Vitamin D, and the only way to do this is to keep it exposed to sunlight. However, not all reptiles need such sunlight, because there are some that are actually nocturnal. These reptiles actually shy away from sunlight! If these needs are not met, it can lead to fatal results in the long run for the reptile.
And if you think this already presents quite a hassle, then wait until you hear about the dietary needs of reptile pets. Reptile pets are more demanding when it comes to feeding. Imagine you have a pet snake. All snakes are carnivorous, and there is no such thing as an exception. Even if you have a snake that is small in size, it will not feed on fruits or vegetables. Snakes eat meat so this has to be established in full. Pre-killed frozen food can be an option here as well. To be sure, it would be better to consult your local veterinarian regarding the matter.
These are just some of the many facts you have to consider when getting reptiles for pets. To ensure that there won’t be any regrets on your part, then careful and thorough consideration should then be implemented. Know everything there is to know about the pet that you are considering getting. This way, you will be able to judge early on if you have it in you to meet each and every need having such a pet would entail. Remember that you are still responsible for the reptile that you will be housing, and that it still has the right to proper care and welfare. Thus, it would only be fair to the reptile if you would take considerable time to weigh out your decision.
