Cool Dog Tricks To Teach Your Canine Pet

For a dog owner, perhaps there is nothing more rewarding than for his dog to learn new tricks. Teaching your dog tricks can easily make him a star attraction and is also a great way to meet new people and friends as well. Here are some cool dog tricks that you can teach your furry friend.

Balance on Nose. This trick is done by balancing a treat on your pet dog’s nose, letting it stay for a little while and then, on command, flicking it up and catching it in its mouth. This trick involves skill and great patience.

Cover the Eyes. Your pet lies down and with his front legs he covers his eyes.

Dog Walk. Your dog walks his fellow dog around by carrying another pet dog’s leash and leading him around with his mouth.

Fetch. When teaching this trick, you can use any implement that your pet dog can easily pick up and will enable him to close his mouth properly around the middle. Start by letting him open his mouth on command. Then slip the implement inside his mouth, leaving it there for a few seconds. Try this for repeatedly and stop. Then, with the implement still in his mouth, hold his mouth gently around the implement for a short moment and let him release the implement out. Next, hold the implement in front of your pet’s mouth. You can gently pull your dog’s head if necessary. Then, you can work towards slowly increasing the distance. Do this repeatedly until your dog will have become accustomed to having the implement in his mouth as well releasing it. The use of commands such as “take it” for taking the implement in his mouth, “hold it” for holding the implement in his mouth and “give” for releasing it is also highly important as well.

High Five. This trick is perhaps the easiest to teach your pet dog. First, command your dog to sit. With one hand, gently hold his paw, while you hand him a treat with the other hand at the same time saying the command words “high five”.

Open and Close the Door. It may be easier to teach your dog this trick if your door has a horizontal handle. In this trick, you teach your dog to jump up and pull the handle down and then push it with his muzzle to close the door.

Play dead. This trick is best practiced when it is ready to rest. But you must teach your dog the ‘down’ command first. Once your dog has performed the said command, let him roll over and rub his tummy. Do this again until you wont have to force him to roll to the side. Then, use the stay command for him to play dead. You can also use your forefinger when commanding your dog to play dead as well.

Speak. To teach your dog how to speak, you can go for hand signals, such as making a twisting motion with your fist closed or opening and shutting the hand with the use of the thumb and other fingers. Using hand signals, command your pet dog to bark as a way of speaking. If he does not bark right away, go on with the command until your dog becomes frustrated and eventually barks. Do this repeatedly until he becomes familiar with this trick.

Tail hunt. This is similar to the simple spinning in circles but only made more elaborate. In this trick, your dog chases his tail and then stops on command.

Keep in mind that a dog’s ability to catch on to tricks vary from one breed to another. It is important to be consistent and patient with dog. Also, don’t forget to reward your dog with dog treats or praises if it properly executes the trick.
