There are varieties of choices for you to choose from when it comes to selecting what tricks you will teach your bird.  Options are indeed broad but the common of which are giving lessons on how to let the bird stand on top of your hand without biting, playing fetch wherein you can throw an object and have your pet get it for you, pretending to be asleep, teaching it to shake its head as if to answer yes or no, and many more.  To accomplish any or all of these, you have to know the basic guidelines and tips about giving lessons on bird tricks.

Most birds are really smart.  If you come up with excellent ideas and tricks for your bird, then more likely it can learn them all.  Before you begin your lessons, you must carefully laid out your plan for it to be more effective.  Designate a specific time each day to impart your lessons.  As much as you can, stick to the chosen time regularly as this will help in developing a habit and is very abiding for your lessons and your pet.  Birds function better with a schedule and possibly look forward to it.  And more importantly, training with a followed schedule makes it easier for your bird to learn.

With everything, utmost caution and safety must be thoroughly considered.  Bird trick lessons are no exceptions.  Keep your training area secure.  Take anything destructive or anything to catch your bird’s attention.  You must set its focus on you alone and to the tricks you have prepared for the day.  You may close doors and windows, and put off any music or sounds.  It will be helpful if you use a room that is quiet, colorful, brightl

y lit and far from its cage.

Like humans, birds need to be closely acquainted at first for it to trust you and be comfortable with you.  Initially, socialize with your bird first.  Deal with your pet when you are in the mood for it, but if you are in one of your moods, put off any lessons until you feel like doing it again.  Any temperament and bad moods will affect your pet in an undesirable way.  Thus, it is important to approach your bird pet nicely, with a cheerful and calm voice.

If it is the very first trick for your bird, assuming it is still untrained and untamed, the recommendable trick for you to teach it is called “step-up.”  This one is relatively easy, as it also benefits transporting or moving your bird around.  Prior to your first lesson, abide to the general rules and guidelines in pet training as mentioned earlier.

As soon as you are ready, slowly and carefully keep your hand moving to the bird.  After which, touch your point finger to your pet’s lower stomach and in a calm and friendly voice, command it to “step up.”  If you have a large bird, you can use your arm for it to perch on.  More often than not, birds step up on cue.  Birds usually recognize such instruction given the proper actions and approach.

As your pet accomplished the trick, along with any other tricks, never forget to praise and appreciate its effort.  Birds too, like to be appreciated and praised.  Rewards and praises will motivate your pet to listen and do things as you say.  You can give your pet its favorite food as your treat for every trick well done.  As your bird learns a new trick, always ask your bird to do it from time to time so as not to forget what it learned.
