Cat Allergy: What To Know

  By AI Editor

Some individuals have intense disliking towards the furry tamed mammalian primarily because of the allergic reactions that cats can incur. However, there are others that still keep the domestic cat despite the cat allergy symptoms they have been suffering.

There are cat owners suffering from certain allergic reactions but have not figured out the real culprit of their present state. Others do not want to pinpoint their precious pet as the possible cause of their current allergic suffering. If facing with this situation, what solution must cat owners have and perform when they are under a compromising situation involving their pet cats and their health? What possible solutions are in store for pet lovers, particularly cat owners, to keep their cats with them after they figured out the real culprit of their ill-health condition?

Cats have certain properties that are allergens to humans. The entire physical aspect of cat is not necessarily regarded an allergen. Saliva and cat dander are regarded to be the causes of cat allergy. The sebaceous gland of cats secretes Fel d1, a glycoprotein, which is found in saliva and skin. The glycoprotein is found to be the root cause of the allergy. Blood and urine of cats may also contain allergens.

Cat dander is found to be more potent an allergen than dog dander. One of the possible reasons for this fact is that cats are not frequently bathed compared to dogs. However, if you are a cat lover, sanitary-wise it is preferred to cleanse the cat. Though cats do the do-it-yourself grooming and cleaning by licking their furs and their body parts, those who are more susceptible to cat allergy may have to bathe their pets frequently as normally recommended. Bathing cats pets can be a way to reduce cat allergy.

What are the possible symptoms of cat allergy?

Cat allergy may cause discomfort and unwanted health symptoms to allergy sufferers. The symptoms may include nasal congestion, watery eyes, sneezing, itchy nose, dyspnea or difficulty in breathing, sore throat, wheezing, coughing and itchy skin. Skin swelling and irritation may also occur when cat allergy sufferers are in contact with allergens from cats.

To get rid of the possible symptoms, it may be best to eliminate the root cause of the allergy symptoms – the cat. Cat lovers and owners may have strong reaction to the mentioned suggestion. However, if you don’t want to ward off your pet, you may also suffer from the cost of acquiring the remedies for the allergy.

But what if you are still unconvinced about it despite of the knowledge and information about cat allergens?

It may be premature to directly pinpoint the domestic cat as the root and real cause of the allergy symptoms. The allergies you have been suffering may come from other sources other than cats so you still are unsure of the situational cause.

To start off in finding the cause of the allergy, it may be a good suggestion to keep the cats out from the house for four weeks. Clean the entire house during the 4-week period. You may have to use a vacuum cleaner and air cleaner. If you have found out you are better off with having no cats around, you may be compelled for a compromised decision.

If the problem is your pet cat but you love your furry friend intensely, you can reduce the onset of allergy by keeping the cats away from your bedroom. You may have to alter the sleeping place preference of your pet. You may have to prevent the cat from lying and napping on beds and upholstered furniture. You may also have to conduct regular cleaning than usual.

Based on some research, cats can provide certain type of therapy to humans similar to dogs. This is called pet therapy. Although it can promote emotional health, a cat may also provide problems to the physical health condition to the allergy-susceptible ones.
