Buying Puppies From The Pet Store

The holiday season is just around the corner, and if you still have no idea what to get your loved ones, you can consider getting them a pet! But before you go to your local pet store, there just might be a few things to consider.

You have surely heard of a lot of stories regarding the pets that these pet stores sell, particularly when it comes to puppies. Some of you may have even heard that the puppies these stores sell come from puppy mills. This is not true at all. But there is actually good reason for such a claim to come about. This is because puppies that come from pet stores are known to have behavior problems and such. Although these behavior problems are not really that huge in nature, the cases are just too many to discount the possibility.

Thus, if you are considering getting a puppy from your local pet store, it is better to be wary regarding the matter. At first glance, the puppies you will find in any local pet store will indeed be very cute and cuddly to look at. You will surely find Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Great Danes, Shetland Sheepdogs, Akitas, Collies, Chow Chows, and Dalmatians, just to name a few.  Still, no matter how exciting the prospect of getting these dogs may be, there are still considerations to deal with.

What exactly are these considerations? As a potential customer, it is way better to know as much as you can about the puppies that the pet store is selling. Be as informed as possible, so that you will come up with the best decision in getting that much awaited pet.

For starters, you should ask the pet stor

e where they get their puppies. If the store clerk would answer you that their puppies come from the puppy mill, then it’s best you just find another place to get a puppy. Puppies from these mills tend to have behavior problems; some of which are violent even to their very own owners. On the other hand, if the puppies come from a dealer, then you should ask if the dealer is duly licensed with the USDA.

You should also ask the pet store if they provide their customers hip and eye certifications. Reliable pet stores would not keep these certifications from their customers. Thus, if these certificates are kept from you as a customer, then it would be better for you to find another store to buy a pet from.  Aside from these, you should also about genetic clearances when it comes to breeding stock.

As expected, you should also ask a series of questions about the breed you are interested in getting. For starters, you should ask about the health problems that are usually associated with the particular breed. What kind of temperament can you expect from the breed? How about barking? You may have heard of the saying that a dog’s bark is worse than its bite, but this is just a cliché. Barking can be a sign of violence for some breeds, so you should also ask if the breed you want to get has the propensity to bark frequently. Also, dogs are very social beings. So, it would also help if you would ask the store just how social the dog you want to buy would be. Grooming is also a matter you should tackle, since you also have to be ready for the inevitable shedding of your pet.

If your pet store can answer these questions right off the bat, then you can expect to get puppies of quality from the establishment. Otherwise, it would be better to just go look for another place. Even better, you can also consider finding a reliable dog breeder to purchase your pet from.
